Surgical instruments are the set of tools designed for performing surgical activities. The basic instruments for dental surgery can be classified as simple or compound. Simple instruments are those the surgeon uses independently; compound instruments are those involving a high level of technology.
Oral health is a topic that receives a great deal of attention today, which is why you should always have the best products in your clinic to ensure the best possible outcomes for your patients.
Basic Instruments for Dental Surgery
Metal Syringe
These are the preferred option, as they allow aspiration by pulling back the rubber plunger. Needles must be changed for each patient. They are easy to clean and sterilise. They are normally used to administer anaesthesia to each patient.
Needles
Needles are very important instruments within the basic dental surgery toolkit. They direct the anaesthetic from the syringe into the tissues of the patient’s mouth. They are designed to achieve better penetration into the dental area and are disposable. They should have a length of between 25 mm and 40 mm.
Carpules
A carpule is a clinical tube that normally contains the solution to be administered to the patient. They can be made of glass or plastic and must be discarded once the expiry date has passed, if corrosion has occurred on the aluminium cap, or if the plunger has been extruded.
Mouth Props
This device keeps the patient’s mouth open for an extended period without causing discomfort. It prevents the tongue or an unexpected closure of the mouth from causing contamination. It also protects the tongue from rotary instruments. They can be made of rubber, latex, or plastic.
Commissure Retractors and Lip Retractors
These are very useful in the basic dental surgery instrument set, as they allow the commissures to be retracted to improve the field of vision during the procedure. They retract the cheeks, lips, and tongue, and can be made of plastic or metal.
Tongue Depressors
This is a basic dental surgery instrument that helps push the tongue down and allows a better examination of the mouth and throat. The most commonly used type has a spatula-like shape. The most widely used are generally made of wood, but plastic and stainless steel versions are also available.
Bone Files
Used to flatten or smooth the end of the bone. They also remove and crush calculus deposits and separate the oral mucosa from the bone.
Mallet and Chisel
These instruments are used to remove tissues that are too hard and bony spicules. They are used in maxillary sinus graft procedures, to break the edges of the bone window.
Scissors, Periodontal Knife, and Forceps
Scissors are used to trim or cut tissues, as well as for sutures. They are made of surgical-grade stainless steel. The periodontal knife is for gingivectomy and gingivoplasty treatments. These forceps are used to assist and stabilise the soft tissues hanging from the mouth during suturing.
Elevators
These instruments are used for the extraction of dental pieces, to perform syndesmotomy, and to extract roots and dental remnants that are intact or fractured. There are many types, including those with a concave surface and a triangular, pointed blade.
