How to choose the perfect medical scales for your facility

Medical scales allow healthcare professionals to determine a patient’s weight with precision. They share similarities with pharmacy scales but differ in that no coin is required to operate them.

They are primarily used by doctors and dietitians to weigh patients during consultations. Pharmacy scales offer more functions than medical scales — displaying not only weight but also height, ideal weight, and body mass index — whereas medical scales measure only the patient’s weight.

Classification of medical scales into two groups

  • Mechanical medical scales: their operation is based on the elastic deformation of a spring. Within this group there are two types of medical scales.
    • Spring scales: not the most precise, but accurate enough for certain applications.
    • Balance scales with counterweight: they compare masses using a sliding weight that moves along a graduated beam.
  • Electronic medical scales: they provide the weight measurement using electronic systems. Load sensors determine the weight by means of an electronic component that changes the voltage according to the load it is bearing.

Different types of medical scales

  • Column scales: available in several models with specific characteristics. They can support up to 300 kg, are electronic, and are very stable.
  • Weighing stations: wireless, with ultrasonic height and weight measurement and a voice guidance system.
  • Floor scales: flat, with a remote cable indicator, easy mobility, extensive technology for great comfort, and a very wide, robust platform.
  • Bed and dialysis scales: enable easy, comfortable, and precise weighing of patients who cannot leave their bed. They are also an indispensable aid in dialysis and intensive care units. The pre-TARE function allows the weight of the bed to be determined. This function enables the scale to retain recorded data in the event of a power outage, with the help of a battery. With these descriptions, we aim to make it easier for you to choose the medical scale that best suits your needs.

Other types of scales

  • Measurement stations: some of their features include wireless operation, a sliding display, and suitability for both children and adults. They include a solid stadiometer for mobile use.
  • Chair scales: designed for patients with reduced mobility or physical limitations. They offer comfort and stability for the patient and can be powered via mains or battery.
  • Organ and nappy (diaper) scales: adaptable to any healthcare institution depending on its requirements and circumstances. They feature sliding weights, foot and head stops, and other characteristics.
