How to Choose the Perfect Otoscope

The otoscope is a tool widely used by general practitioners, ear, nose and throat specialists, and paediatricians. The perfect otoscope is about the length of a pen and fairly slim. It is inserted into the ear canal and has a transparent lens through which the depth of the ear is observed. The head contains an internal light that expands the field of vision during an examination.

Otoscopy is an examination of the ear that spans from the outer ear to the eardrum. Through it, the interior of the ear and the eardrum membrane can be observed. It is a painless procedure that provides physicians with a great deal of information.

Types of Otoscopes

  • Fibre optic otoscope: With this device, the view of the interior of the ear is completely clear. There are no shadows to interfere with visibility. The light source is in the handle, not in the head. It also provides greater comfort during the examination.
  • Halogen otoscope: This type has a bulb at the top, in the head, which provides direct illumination of the ear canal. The drawback is that the bulb covers a large portion of the field of view and can cause some difficulty for the examining physician.
  • LED otoscope: It shares characteristics with both of the above. The key difference is that the light output is much greater, thanks to LED technology. It is energy-efficient and does not need to be charged frequently.

How to Choose the Perfect Otoscope

When choosing the perfect otoscope, the most important factor is achieving a clear view of the interior of the ear, so the first characteristic to evaluate is the type of illumination. The invention of fibre optics has greatly improved both the efficiency and the reliability of these devices, resulting in more efficient outcomes when examinations are performed.

When the lighting is adequate, the physician’s work during patient examination is much easier. Halogen bulbs produce more reliable results and are considerably more affordable.

LED otoscopes are more expensive but have a very long service life. To use them, you will need specula. These come in different models and must be changed for hygiene reasons — they are therefore disposable.

The second characteristic to consider after lighting is the lens — specifically, the lens magnification. This is necessary to see all the structural details of the ear canal clearly, since the perfect otoscope must provide the physician with as much information as possible.

Finally, the third criterion to evaluate is the device’s power source. Some run on disposable batteries, others on rechargeable batteries. The great advantage of these devices is that they are ideal for physicians who make home visits or work across multiple clinics. Here you can find the best examination tables for your clinic.
